私はイギリス人のダレンです。宜しくお願いします。今、横浜能楽堂でインターンシップでお世話になっています。

 

高校生の時から、私は日本の古典芸能に興味を持っています。特に、私は能と文楽が好きです。

 

イギリスにもたくさん芸能がありますが、日本と異なり、古くからイギリス人だけに伝わるようにものはありません。

 

それに、修業方法は日本とイギリスは違います。例えば、イギリスに師弟関係はありません。もう一つの相違は、日本では舞台上に囃子方や地謡がいますが、イギリスの演劇では舞台に俳優しかいません。

 

日本の古典芸能に関心がありましたが、残念なことに、イギリスで日本の古典芸能を観るチャンスはほとんどありません。日本の古典芸能を詳しく知るために、私は日本に来ることにしました。

 

私は東京の世田谷区に住んでいますが、横浜市が大好きです。海が見えるといい感じだし、横浜でたくさん文化のイベントがあるので、横浜は素晴らしい街だと思います。

 

横浜能楽堂は美しいところです。建物のスタイルは伝統的だし、エレーベータさえ立派なものです。

 

毎日、横浜能楽堂は忙しいところです。公演を開催したり、見学者の案内をしたり。こども向けの狂言ワークショップもあります。スタッフの皆さんは優しいし、私は多様な事を経験させてもらっています。

 

今までで一番好きなのは、こども狂言ワークショップを見学する事です。そのワークショップでは、こどもたちは一流のプロの狂言師に直接教わります。小学校の一年生もそのワークショップをやっていて、私はびっくりしました。その小学校の一年生は上手に演じて、私を良く笑わせました。

 

そのワークショップやバリアフリー能などによって、誰でも日本の古典芸能を観に来られるように、横浜能楽堂は大変な努力をしています。イギリスで日本の古典芸能を紹介するためにこの素晴らしい体験をどうやって生かそうか考えているところです。

I’m Darren from the UK. I’m currently interning at the Yokohama Noh Theater.

 

Ever since I was in secondary school I have been interested in Japan’s traditional performing arts. I especially like Noh and Bunraku.

 

Whilst there is a vibrant theatre scene in the UK, unlike Japan, we cannot lay claim to a theatrical tradition handed down through the centuries.

 

In terms of actors’ training, Japan and the UK differ widely. For example, in the UK there is no ‘master-apprentice’ system in place. The traditional Japanese stage is also much busier than its British counterpart. On the Japanese traditional stage there are musicians and singers, as well as the actors. In the UK, we only have actors on stage.

 

Japanese traditional theatre seemed fascinating to me. Unfortunately there are few opportunities to see traditional Japanese theatre in the UK. Hoping to find out more about traditional theatre, I decided to come to Japan.

 

I currently live in Tokyo’s Setagaya ward but I love spending time in Yokohama. Being near the sea makes me feel good, and there are so many cultural events going on all the time. I think Yokohama is a great place.

 

The Yokohama Noh Theater is such a beautiful venue. It has been built in a traditional style and even the lift is exquisite!.

 

Every day is busy at the Yokohama Noh Theater. Apart from staging productions, there are also public tours, as well as Kyogen classes for children. The staff have been so lovely and have allowed me to take part in a wide range of activities.

 

Of the many things I have been able to do so far, my favourite has been sitting in on the Kyogen classes for children. These classes are led by one of Japan’s finest Kyogen performers. Even pupils in the first year of primary school are enrolled in the class! I thought they performed these difficult texts with great skill – they really made me laugh.

 

Through activities such as the Kyogen classes for children and the “barrier-free” Noh productions catering for customers with disabilities, the Yokohama Noh Theater is going to special efforts to make the traditional performing arts available to everyone.

 

This wonderful experience has made me even more determined to promote Japan’s traditional performing arts in the UK.
